Regional Regulators Roundtable Series – East Africa

The East Africa Regional Regulators Roundtable is underway at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Addis Ababa, convening capital market and pension regulators from across the region to strengthen regulatory cooperation and advance capital markets development.

Hosted by the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority (ECMA), FSD Africa, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), FSD Ethiopia the series provides a high-level platform for peer learning, policy dialogue, and knowledge exchange among regulators.

Discussions focus on enhancing regulatory and supervisory frameworks that support domestic capital mobilization, local currency market development, institutional investment, and sustainable cross-border capital flows.

Through evidence-based dialogue and practical problem-solving, participants are working to identify actionable reforms that can deepen, strengthen, and better integrate capital markets across East Africa.

The series reflects a shared commitment to building resilient, inclusive, and well-functioning financial systems that can drive long-term economic growth and expand investment opportunities in the region

Capital markets development is a key component of the Government of Ethiopia’s
(GoE) Home-Grown Economic Reform Program and the 10-Year Development Plan
(2021- 2031). In line with this commitment, the Capital Markets Proclamation (No.
1248/2021) was adopted by the House of Peoples’ Representatives in June 2021, which
included the establishment of the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority (ECMA).
